Moving to Telluride, Colorado

Things to Consider When Relocating to Telluride, Colorado

Anyone who has ever stepped foot in Telluride, Colorado, has said (or at least thought), ‘man, it’d be cool to live here’. Let us tell you, it’s absolutely amazing!

However, Telluride is a small mountain town and there are a few things to consider if you are planning on relocating or moving to Telluride permanently with your family. Take a peek at some interesting facts about Telluride you should know before moving here!

The Nearest Traffic Light Is 45 Miles Away in Ridgway, Colorado

And the nearest Target and Home Depot are over an hour away in Montrose, Colorado! Living in a mountain town is picturesque, but things aren’t always as accessible as living in a suburb or city. While there are grocery stores in Telluride and Mountain Village, prices tend to be higher due to transportation costs. Monthly trips to Montrose for some shopping are the norm for most Telluride residents.

Telluride Has the #2 School District in Colorado

We’re nerds and we’re proud of it! We may have ski PE classes, but our kids are also dedicated to getting a great education. The Telluride School District was just ranked in the top two in Colorado. Click here to read more about our ranking and read the report.

We Have 2,059 Full-Time Residents

Telluride is a resort town, but the people who keep things running live here year-round! Depending on the time of year, town can seem quite crowded (think festivals and spring break), but other times, you can literally chase tumbleweeds down Main Street. It’s certainly an adjustment if you’re not used to it!

We Have 2 Off-Seasons

Sounds weird, right? Well, Telluride completely shuts down in the spring from the end of ski season to Memorial Day as well as in the fall for a few weeks. The gondola is closed during that time, as well as many restaurants, shops, etc. Telluride is a literal ghost town during those times, which is much appreciated for many of the locals who work so hard during the season. Just be aware that you may have to wait a few weeks to get your favorite cheese curds from Cornerhouse!

Home to the Gondola

We love our Gondola, which is open daily except during the off-seasons. It’s the easiest way to get from Telluride to Mountain Village (or vice versa) and while it boasts great views, many people use it as a means of transportation to work. While there are bus systems and some other options for outlying neighborhoods, most people who live in Telluride need to have a vehicle in order to get around. There are no Ubers or Lyfts, so be sure to take that into consideration when moving here!

Contribute to the Community

One of the greatest things about Telluride is the generosity of its locals. Whether it be the Second Chance Humane Society, One to One Mentoring or the Telluride Foundation – there’s an organization in our town that supports something you believe in! Volunteering your time is the best way to get to know your neighbors and integrate yourself into the community.
